Dogs spend a large share of their lives in the senior stage, and a few adjustments at home go a long way toward keeping that stretch comfortable. Here’s what tends to change and what to watch for.
Coat and Skin
Coats often thin or gray, and skin can get drier and more sensitive. Gentler shampoos and slightly more frequent brushing help keep both comfortable.
Mobility
Stiffness after resting or hesitation on stairs are common and worth mentioning to your vet. Shorter, more frequent walks are often easier than one long one.
Nutrition
Activity levels usually drop, so calorie needs often drop with them. Ask your vet whether a senior-formula food or a portion adjustment makes sense at your dog’s next checkup.
