Most bites are preventable once you know the warning signs. Dogs almost always communicate discomfort before they bite — the trick is knowing what to look for.
Early Warning Signs
A stiff body, tucked tail, ears pinned back, lip licking, or turning the head away are all signs a dog wants space — long before a growl or a bite. Give them room instead of pushing through it.
Teaching Kids to Greet Dogs Safely
Ask before petting any dog, let the dog approach first, and avoid hugging or reaching over a dog’s head. Never approach a dog that is eating, sleeping, or with puppies.
